@pulp.horror: The Witches of Carolina (Part 4): No Bill, Ignoramus The Witches of Carolina ends where it truly began — with flesh-and-blood North Carolina women, dragged into real colonial courtrooms and cleared, and known up and down the roads as healers with names and addresses. On the twenty-seventh of October, 1703, the General Court heard two witchcraft charges from Currituck. Susannah Evans stood accused of bewitching a woman to death; Martha Richardson of bewitching a man. The jury answered both with two words, then made the accusers pay. Evans did not wait to be a victim — jailed as a witch, she sued her accuser, and her husband John demanded a trial to prove it. The courts, again and again, let the accused walk. Later came Emma Dupree and her healing berry tree, and Doctor Jim Jordan, whose muddy road drew cars from New York. Whatever the word aimed at them, the real ones had names — and the record kept them. Would you have stayed to see more? #witches #northcarolina #scarystories #folklore #horrortok
