This is so cool! They evolved to find the optimal solution to the Secretary Problem (that’s the name of the Wikipedia page). Assuming you have N years to date people, you should date freely for N/e years, then marry the first person who exceeds the quality of all those you already met. This maximizes the expected quality of your choice given that the quality of people you date is random.
