This is a long video, but if you’re interested in the training process for my 6 month old long eared owl then this is the video for you! My main goal with Twiglet has been getting him to exhibit some nice aerial flights, to eventually encourage quartering behaviour. Getting backwards and forwards flights to/from a perch is fairly straightforward with birds of prey, but getting more aerial flights can be a whole different ball game! I’ve tried all sorts of approaches, and up until now not had much luck as rather than circling around he will always return to the same perch. So our main obstacle has been moving on from the backwards and forward flights, and instead figuring out a way to let him know he can leave my fist and then circle back and return to me rather than flying in a straight line back to the perch or onto the floor. He is quite bound to the perch, and that’s something that needs to change. He’s also not confident in making his own decision to take flight, and will instead wait on the perch for long periods of time until I recall him. In the last two days I think we have made a lot of progress with this! What started with only flying when recalled with the fist up and some accidental circling from getting too high to land has turned into the realisation that he can make the decision to start flying without being recalled, and circle back round to me to land again. This is exactly the behaviour I’ve been working to get! We now have a nice base to work from. My next steps are building up the amount of times he circles around me to increase the duration of the flight, continue to instill a verbal cue to leave my fist so I don’t have to tilt it to get him airborne (otherwise he’ll be sat there for half an hour!), and to now only recall him from an aerial position rather than recalling him from a perched position. Eventually I can then start to be more picky with the flights I reward to encourage him to range out a bit more or get a little bit of height on his flights. My theory is that once he builds experience through this training period, he should be able to then have the confidence to exhibit much more natural flight styles and behaviours during his free flying time. Our other mission is to imp his tail! He damaged a couple of his tail feathers as a tiny baby when he misjudged a landing on one of his first ever flights, and unfortunately as they’re so delicate they have suffered a bit of a domino effect. So I am on the look out for some donor feathers to give him a full tail again! This is a transplant type process that Freddie had a few years ago, but I think it’ll be much more difficult to do for Twiglet as his feathers are finer and he’s a lot more fidgety! #Longearedowl #freeflying #birdofprey #owl #owltraining
