“I wish you would stop making fun of the luteal phase. It’s not funny and makes women look weak and like victims of their hormones.” ^comments/messages I receive pretty frequently People also tell me that making content like this just gives women an excuse to treat their partners poorly or behave however they want. So I want to speak to this! When I make these videos, I’m not talking about the luteal phase in general. I’m talking about PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder), a clinical diagnosis that can involve extreme emotional symptoms. I love Ryan so much and I love our relationship and the life we’re building, but like clockwork about 10 days before my period my experience of my life can change dramatically. And after years of tracking my symptoms I can see this pattern so clearly. For people with PMDD, research suggests that the brain has an increased sensitivity to normal hormonal fluctuations, including changes involving allopregnanolone, a metabolite of progesterone that interacts with the brain’s GABA system, which helps regulate stress and emotional responses. Which can profoundly affect our mood, emotional regulation, stress sensitivity, and the way we perceive ourselves and our relationships. It doesn’t mean that every thought I have in my luteal phase is automatically untrue or that I’m not responsible for how I treat Ryan. I never want to normalize treating our partners poorly, being careless with our bodies, or avoiding accountability for our behavior. But I DO want to normalize talking about what PMDD can actually feel like. Which is why I make videos like this :) There is a difference between explaining a behavior and excusing it. We can take responsibility for our actions AND have compassion for the very real symptoms we’re experiencing. My hope is that these videos help people with PMDD feel seen, help their loved ones better understand what they’re experiencing, and encourage more conversations about a condition that deserves to be taken seriously. 💖 link to my free downloadable PMDD symptom tracker in my bio! #luteal #pmdd #lutealphase #therapist #therapy
