As a psychologist specializing in assessment, patients often come to my office seeking answers for treatment-resistant anxiety, ADHD, or burnout. But during the intake, hearing certain "pink flags" can shift the clinical picture for me. These aren't the oversimplified "relatable traits" often popularized on social media, nor are they the overt diagnostic criteria. Instead, they are subtle, empirically supported neurodevelopmental and physiological markers that suggest we need to look closer at a possible autism spectrum profile. From atypical motor patterns (like persistent toe walking) and uneven cognitive profiles, to autonomic and sensory differences (like chronic GI distress, rigid dietary patterns, micro-transition distress, and the profound physical exhaustion of masking), these clues point to a highly specific neurodivergent processing style. Identifying these patterns isn't about pathologizing common human quirks, it's about connecting the dots to provide the right support, validation, and clinical clarity. For GI issues, sensory processing, and autonomic differences: Wasca, J., et al. (2023). Gastrointestinal symptoms and sensory over-responsivity in autism spectrum disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 53(4), 1420–1435. For autistic burnout, social exhaustion, and cognitive load: Raymaker, D. M., et al. (2020). “Having all of your internal resources exhausted beyond measure”: An exploratory study of autistic burnout. Autism in Adulthood, 2(2), 132-143. For motor atypicalities (toe walking) and developmental asymmetry: Valagussa, G., et al. (2018). Toe walking, motor skills, and sensory processing in children with autism spectrum disorder. Autism, 22(8), 990-1000. #psychologist #autism #autisticadult #autistictiktok #latediagnosedautistic
