I am a graduate academic advisor (for PhD and MS) - please notify the department chair, graduate program coordinator (if this person is not your faculty advisor), and the dean of graduate programs at your university, once you have had some time to process this, and gather your thoughts. I’ve never seen a student get positive feedback, and then the defense be cancelled on the day it’s scheduled.

As a PhD candidate myself, the dissertation is academic hazing. That's completely unacceptable from your committee. If you want to take action I would see if your university has an ombudsman.

I drove 6+ hours to my lifelong best friend’s PhD defense to support her after 6 years of blood sweat and tears in grad school. It is that deep. It’s such an important moment. I’m so sorry this happened to you. Go hold everyone accountable!

That is unacceptable and unforgivable. The entire committee should be reprimanded and replaced. If this doesn’t go your way, you should notify the accreditation body and the state higher education board.

THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME. My chair sent an email to the Dean the WEEK I was supposed to walk the stage (it was spring commencement; I was set to defend in summer) saying he hadn't seen any of my work and so I shouldn't walk. I sent all my receipts (emails between us with my completed chapters attached, emails he had never responded to and that I sent multiple follow-ups about, defense/graduation timelenes he confirmed, etc.) to the department head and my chair was pulled from every single committee he was on. I was assigned a new chair and he got a slap on the wrist. I'm still on 150mg of Zoloft and recovering from anxious spiral and burnout it caused 2 years later. Academics are losers.
