@siliconvalleycomfort: Whoever brazed the service valves on this system cooked them, and it had been slowly leaking refrigerant ever since. A melted valve doesn't seal. It just leaks politely. The fix: cut out the cooked valves and braze in new ones plus a new filter drier, with nitrogen flowing and a wet rag on the valve body (the part the last guy skipped). Then pressure test, pull a vacuum, charge, and verify. 10.8° subcooling on the gauges. Sealed system, done leaking. If your AC or heat pump needs a refrigerant top-off every year, it doesn't need refrigerant. It needs somebody to find the leak. And a heat pump moves that same refrigerant to heat the house in November, so a leak is not a summer-only problem. Silicon Valley Comfort, San Jose.
