@e.allen.fine.art: From reference photo to finished painting. This one was more of a challenge than I expected. It started as a quiet, flat, foggy morning. But somewhere along the way my horizon crept up. Before I knew it, I had a painting split right down the middle. Half sky, half ground. A 50-50 split makes a painting feel stuck. Your eye doesn't know where to rest. So I opened a gap in the trees along the horizon, so your eye could slip through and travel back into the fog. Then I let the sun start burning through. Suddenly the sky had a reason to be there. Now I love it. Cool blue-violet sky, sage greens, fog drifting through the shrubs, and a little gold where the light reaches the ground. Sometimes you paint yourself into trouble. Sometimes you paint yourself back out. Burning Through, oil 16x12
