@beaconpostpartum: A mom from New Mexico sent me a hug at 3:22am and I started crying. Which is honestly embarrassing because it was literally a tiny pink heart on my phone😂😭 But if you’ve ever been postpartum, you KNOW. Sometimes someone can ask if you want a glass of water and you burst into tears because it’s the first time all day somebody has asked what YOU need. That’s the level of emotionally unstable we’re working with here. 🫠 I was sitting in the nursery holding my baby, who had finally stopped crying after what felt like six business days. My back hurt. My boobs hurt. I had spit-up in my hair and absolutely no recollection of the last time I washed it. And everyone else was asleep. Of course they were. Even the dog was snoring. Meanwhile I was sitting there wondering if I could somehow train myself to sleep standing up. 😂 And the thing is, I wasn’t even having a particularly terrible night. The baby was fed. Changed. Safe. Finally calm. I was just lonely. Like REALLY lonely. That weird postpartum loneliness where you’re never actually alone because someone is constantly attached to you, but you would give your left arm to have a conversation with another adult. Preferably one who doesn’t tell you to “sleep when the baby sleeps.” OH REALLY, KAREN? Should I also vacuum when the baby vacuums? 😭 Anyway. I was scrolling on my phone and saw this little notification. A mom from New Mexico sent me a hug. Then another one. And another. Three moms I had never met, in completely different places, basically saying, “Hey girl. We’re awake too.” 💗 And I just lost it. Because for some reason, knowing that another mom was awake at the exact same ridiculous hour made everything feel a little less heavy. I opened the map and there were all these little glowing dots. Every single one was another mom awake somewhere. Feeding a baby. Pumping. Rocking. Scrolling because her baby finally fell asleep but now her brain has decided to revisit an embarrassing conversation from 2009. 🙃 And I kept thinking about how strange motherhood is. We are all doing the same things at the same times, but somehow so many of us feel like we’re doing them completely alone. There are moms sitting in dark bedrooms right now, wondering if they’re doing enough. Moms who haven’t eaten a proper meal today. Moms who are so tired they’re crying over something they would normally laugh about. Moms who love their babies more than anything but would also really appreciate being left alone for approximately 11 minutes. 😂 And sometimes I think what we need most isn’t another parenting tip. It’s another mom. Someone who doesn’t need you to explain why you’re crying. Someone who understands that you can be grateful and exhausted. Happy and overwhelmed. Completely in love with your baby and desperate for a break. ALL AT THE SAME TIME. And none of that makes you a bad mom. ❤️ I think that’s why those little hugs got to me. Because nobody was asking me to be positive. Nobody was telling me to enjoy every moment. Nobody was giving me a lecture about sleep training or wake windows. It was just three women somewhere in the world who happened to be awake with me. And somehow that was enough. So if you’re reading this at 3am with a baby on your chest, a cold coffee on your nightstand, and approximately 4% battery left… Hi. 👋😂 There are other moms awake too. And I hope you find a few of them. Because this whole motherhood thing is a lot easier when you don’t feel like you’re the only one doing the night shift. 💛 #mom #baby #MomsofTikTok #momlife #newborn
