I genuinely don’t understand how people confuse acceptance with indoctrination. Acknowledging that LGBTQ people exist, teaching children to treat them with respect, and recognizing that some people love differently is not “pushing an agenda.” It’s teaching children that the world is full of people who are different from them, and that those people deserve the same dignity and respect as everyone else. You cannot shield children from people who simply exist. They will inevitably encounter LGBTQ people in their schools, communities, workplaces, and everyday lives. So why would we want them to grow up believing these people are something to be hidden or avoided? Why not teach them that different families exist, different people love differently, and none of that makes someone less deserving of respect? If simply acknowledging someone’s existence is considered “pushing it,” then what exactly are you afraid your child will learn? That LGBTQ people are real? That they deserve kindness? That not everyone lives the same way you do? Children aren’t confused by the existence of different people. They become confused when adults teach them that certain people are unacceptable, then expect them to navigate a world where those people are everywhere. Representation isn’t forcing children to believe something. It’s making sure they understand the world they actually live in. And acceptance doesn’t require you to abandon your own beliefs. It requires you to recognize that your beliefs don’t give you the right to deny someone else’s existence or dignity.
