And when hair discrimination and Eurocentric beauty standards influence how we’re treated, our styling choices aren’t always just about preference. Yes, natural hair maintenance can be expensive and time-consuming. But why do we often justify spending hundreds of dollars and hours maintaining wigs, weaves, and silk presses while considering that same investment in our natural curls and coils excessive? This isn’t about criticizing how Black women choose to wear their hair. I love our versatility! It’s about questioning why we’ve been conditioned to value certain hair textures more than others.
