There was a time in Nigeria when disc jockeying was hardly regarded as a serious profession. For many, being a DJ was not considered a respectable career. But among those who helped change that perception was a young man born in Obalende, Lagos Island, who would go on to become one of the most respected figures in Nigerian music. . Born Oluwaforijimi Adewale Amu on October 15, 1966, DJ Jimmy Jatt initially pursued music as a rapper known as Master J. After recording several demos without securing a record deal, he turned to DJing, eventually building a career that would help reshape the profession in Nigeria. . In the 1990s, his popular Road Block street gatherings in Obalende provided a platform for emerging talents, including Daddy Showkey, Daddy Fresh, Junior & Pretty, and Ruff Rugged & Raw. His contributions went beyond the turntables, creating opportunities for musicians at a time when exposure was difficult to come by. . Reflecting on his journey in a 2016 interview with The Sun, Jimmy Jatt recalled wanting to prove that DJing was a legitimate profession, never imagining how far it would take him. . Despite his accomplishments, Jimmy Jatt has always acknowledged those who came before him. In that same 2016 interview, he declined to call himself a pioneer, explaining that other DJs had paved the way for him, just as he had helped create opportunities for others. . Inducted into the Hip Hop World Hall of Fame in 2006, he went on to release The Definition (2007), featuring several Nigerian music stars, while Jimmy’s Jump Off became another important platform for showcasing musical talent. . As we celebrate his 60th birthday today, we revisit this nostalgic session with Plantashun Boiz from his Afrobeats Evolution Vol. 1 series, bringing back some of the music that soundtracked a generation. . Happy 60th Birthday to the one and only Cool DJ Jimmy Jatt! . @djjimmyjatt , thank you for your immense contributions to Nigerian music and for opening doors for generations of talent. Wishing you many more years of good health, happiness and continued success. 🎉 . . Footage: DJ Jimmy Jatt | Afrobeats Evolution Vol. 1 . . #NostalgicSoundNg #DJJimmyJatt #Afrobeats
