Get That Sound: Medium-Low Tuning Process 14” Tom Edition This particular tuning is one that I don’t tend to show off a lot, although it’s my favorite tuning for a 14” rack tom. Let’s get into it! This tuning is built on a well-tuned resonant side drum head tuned a fourth above the batter. I’m using an Evans G1 Clear for the bottom head. Its single-ply, 10 mil film produces an open, expressive sound with a wide tuning range. With that said, the reso head is tight sitting at 143 Hz (D 3) but still has some give. This ensures I get enough tone and control in the sound but not so much that I get unwanted overtones. This process allows the rack tom to sound open and full but not out of control, especially with no muffling. Now, the batter-side tuning is a little more involved. For starters, I evenly finger-tighten each tension rod as much as possible until I can’t pull them any further with the Pull Cord Drum Key. After finger-tightening, I slowly bring up the tension using quarter turns. This approach adds enough tension while still letting you clearly hear the shell and head working together. The secret sauce for this process is the drum key technique, feel, & drum head choice. The drum key technique helps me keep track of the tension and know exactly how much further I need to go to reach the desired pitch. After that, I fine-tune and check pitches with the Tunebot just for reference and learning. The @Evans Drumheads Onyx frosted tom batter drumhead delivers a more defined attack, with a relatively short sustain, and a darker tone to match the aesthetic. This 14” x 10” Rack Tom tensions up fast, so having key technique and knowing your drum head is essential for me not to under-tension it and make it sound flabby. What do you guys think? How do you achieve your ideal rack tom sound? Does the process look similar to this? Drop a comment and let’s talk about it! Okay. Byeeeee. 🥁🤓👊🏻❤️🙏🏻 — #testabeatdrums #rack #tuningprocess #tom #CapCut
