Ladies and gentlemen, Daily Monitor yesterday reported that more than ten senior UPDF officers have been arrested since Muhoozi Kainerugaba took over as Chief of Defence Forces. The alleged offences range from treachery and espionage to corruption, theft and bribery. But what is really happening inside the military? I reached out to someone who was once part of the system, Lt. Herbert Matanda Mabonga, to ask him what he makes of this growing wave of arrests. His response was explosive. Mabonga suggested that Muhoozi could be positioning himself for a coup against his own father, President Museveni. He argues that some of the officers being arrested are people opposed to Muhoozi's presidential ambitions, while others are allegedly being arrested in staged operations designed to send a warning to senior military officers who might stand in his way. In other words, Mabonga believes these arrests may be about much more than discipline and fighting corruption. He sees them as a campaign to consolidate power, eliminate resistance and intimidate anyone who might challenge Muhoozi's ambitions. Those are extraordinary claims. Is this a genuine military crackdown, an internal power struggle, or something much bigger unfolding behind the scenes? I put these questions directly to Lt. Herbert Matanda Mabonga. Listen carefully to his explanation.
