It started in October 2025, when Charlotte Paynter was receiving treatment at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital in Florida. On October 6, her doctor determined that she no longer needed hospital care and cleared her for discharge. However, according to court records, Paynter refused to leave and continued staying in Room 373. At first, hospital staff tried to help her leave. According to the hospital, they contacted her family, offered transportation, and made several attempts to arrange her departure. But the situation remained unresolved. Then, in November, the hospital sent her a written notice asking her to leave and warning that legal action could follow. Still, she remained there. By March 2026, the hospital had filed a lawsuit, asking a judge to order her to leave and allow sheriff's deputies to assist if necessary. Hospital officials said the occupied room was preventing them from caring for other patients who needed beds. However, before the scheduled hearing took place, the hospital withdrew its lawsuit and later confirmed that Paynter was no longer staying there. What should have been a routine hospital discharge had turned into a nearly five-month dispute that eventually reached the courts.
