@katherinecopeland0: If you were a parent or a teacher in the 1980s, you probably remember Koko's Kitten. Did you read that book to your kids? The gorilla was born at the San Francisco Zoo. In the 1970s she started learning sign language from Penny Patterson, and she ended up using more than 1,000 signs. Year after year she kept asking for a cat. For her birthday in July 1984, Patterson let her pick a kitten from a litter. The choice was a little gray and white Manx with no tail. All Ball was the name she gave it. That huge gorilla carried it around and tried to nurse it the way a mother gorilla would. In December the kitten got out and was hit by a car. When Patterson told her, Koko signed "bad, sad, bad." A little later, Patterson wrote, she heard Koko crying. Other kittens came after that one. Robin Williams visited in 2001 and called it a "mind-altering experience" after she tickled him. Fred Rogers came too, and Koko signed "I love you" to the man she'd watched on TV. The old gorilla died in her sleep in Woodside, California, in June 2018, at 46. #koko #gorilla #kitten #cat #catsoftiktok
