@dr_noemie_exotics_vet: One of the first things I investigate when assessing a reptile's husbandry is their lighting setup. Having a UVB lamp and providing appropriate UVB exposure are two very different things. UVB exposure helps many reptiles produce vitamin D3, which is essential for normal calcium metabolism. But the amount actually reaching an animal depends on several factors. Here are five things to check: ☀️ 1. Distance: UVB intensity changes substantially with distance from the lamp. Placing it too far from the basking area can mean inadequate exposure. ☀️ 2. Barriers: Ordinary glass and many plastics block most or virtually all UVB. Mesh can also reduce the amount reaching your reptile, depending on its design. ☀️ 3. Lamp type: Different bulbs have very different UVB outputs and distribution patterns. A compact bulb and a linear T5 tube are not automatically interchangeable. ☀️ 4. Lamp age: A lamp can still produce visible light while its UVB output has declined. Replacement intervals depend on the specific product and actual output. ☀️ 5. Species and positioning: A desert-dwelling lizard and a shade-associated gecko don't necessarily require the same UVB exposure. The animal must also be able to move between areas with different levels of light. So how can you know whether your setup is appropriate? A suitable UV Index meter, such as a Solarmeter 6.5, can help assess UVB at the level where your reptile actually basks. Measurements then need to be interpreted against species-specific recommendations. Remember that UVB is only one part of appropriate lighting and calcium metabolism. Temperature, diet, supplementation and access to suitable light gradients also matter. Follow for more veterinary insights into the details of exotic animal care that are often overlooked.
