@youreducationadvo: Why are some states and school districts adding a question to the IEP process asking parents, “Has anyone discouraged you from bringing someone to this meeting?” I have seen firsthand how some parents are discouraged from bringing an advocate, attorney, or another support person to an IEP meeting. Sometimes the discouragement is direct. Other times, it is much more subtle. Parents are told things like: “You don’t need an advocate. We’re all on the same team.” “Bringing an advocate will only make the meeting more difficult.” “We would prefer to work directly with you.” “Why are you bringing someone? Don’t you trust us?” Some parents are even made to feel that bringing an advocate is confrontational or that it will damage their relationship with the school. This is exactly why asking about discouragement matters. Under federal law, parents have the right to include individuals who have knowledge or special expertise regarding their child as members of the IEP team. Parents should never feel pressured to attend an IEP meeting alone, especially when they are navigating complicated evaluations, placement decisions, behavioral concerns, or disagreements about services. An advocate is not automatically an adversary. An advocate can help parents understand the process, ask informed questions, review documentation, and meaningfully participate in decisions about their child’s education. And let’s remember something important. A parent bringing an advocate does not create a problem. Often, the problems already existed before the advocate was contacted. Parental participation is a protected right, not a privilege granted by the school district. #sped #fape #specialeducation #iep #504plan

True. Because once we started mentioning “advocate” things changed and he got better treatment, more resources, and had Ana amazing school year.

We’ve had that statement for the last 5 years on the IEP’s. I couldn’t tell you before that though.

I am a community based therapist and I let my families know that I will attend any and all school meetings I am invited too. The amount of parents who told me their schools said they didn't need anyone and it should just be them is not 0. Also if the kid is old enough they can attend too and schools have tried to tell students no as well.

I didn’t get diagnosed with dyslexia till 3 months before I graduated. I was not asked to attend my own IEP meeting and when my parents showed up everyone was confused where I was? Like I wasn’t asked to come?

As a school official, you can bring who you want. We ask that you let the school know before so they can have appropriate support. We don’t want our 2nd year SPED teacher having to negotiate with a seasoned advocate on their own. I had that happen my first year as a teacher, it almost made me quit because I was not prepared and felt like I had been thrown to the sharks. I want to make sure none of my teachers ever feel that way if I can help it.

As a parent with a kid with an IEP, and an educator. Advocates need to spend more time on their knowledge than their ego. Do better!

Advocates can be wonderful things. You write in your word salad “An Advocate is not automatically an adversary.” Then why are you so combative? So angry at your former employer? Willing to take money without disclosing credentials upfront though most states and licensing boards require that you do so? Why do you appear angrier at school districts rather than remember there are real life kids behind the paperwork? Why do you attempt to write goals and demand eligibility for services such as OT and Speech when you do not hold licenses in those areas? Why do you roll your eyes, smirk, interrupt, raise your voice, and demand people be professional when you are anything but professional? Why did you not know a LSSP cannot apply a Speech Impairment label as they do not have the licensure for it? Why do you resort to middle age mean girl behavior and words such as “trolling” shen called out for your fallacies? Adults can participate in conversations without name calling as they the knowledge and words to do it. Sadly, you do not.
