“Keep the ball moving at one constant speed.” I used to teach it too. Here’s what Steph Curry’s shot really shows. It’s a common cue: keep the ball moving fluidly, at one speed, through the shot. It makes sense. The more the ball changes speed, the harder it should be to repeat. The problem is, the evidence flat out rejects it. Every NBA player has significant changes in speed through their shooting motion. To reach the rim from around the NBA three-point line with good arc, the average NBA player needs about 30 ft/s of release speed. Distance, arc and release height move it a little, but it’s fairly universal. Watch the path’s color in the loop: green and yellow where the ball is fast, orange where it’s slow. Curry has one of the most one-motion, continuous shots in the NBA. Early in the lift the ball is moving over 20 ft/s. At the set point it slows to 13 ft/s, less than half its release speed. Then it accelerates again to 30 ft/s. Players with more of a two-motion shot slow the ball even more. Nikola Jokić also releases around 30 ft/s on NBA threes, but the ball slows to 6.5 ft/s at his set point. Klay Thompson is around 9. That doesn’t make either one or two motion shots better than the other. Both have advantages and drawbacks. Keeping the ball moving keeps generating force, but it’s a longer path to control. Slowing at the set point works like a reset button for control, but it takes more strength to get back to 30 ft/s. Do young players need to keep the ball accelerating through the set point? Maybe. Without the strength to get the ball back up to speed by release, they may need to accelerate from the beginning. Possible, but that’s theory, not evidence. What the evidence does support: once a player has the strength for the shot, we don’t actually want the ball traveling at one continuous speed. The “physics of shooting” version sounds logical, but it isn’t backed up by how people actually shoot. Our job is to understand the real truth, and the trade-offs that come with it. Comment: what’s something you used to teach that the evidence changed your mind on? #stephcurry #shootingcoach #basketballshooting #shotmetrics #basketballcoach
