Surigao del Norte, an archipelagic coastal province situated at the northeastern tip of Mindanao in the Caraga Region (Region XIII), is celebrated as the "Surfing Capital of the Philippines" and the "Nickel Capital of the Country." Flanked by the Philippine Sea and the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Leyte Gulf to the north, the province bridges world-renowned island destinations, pre-colonial maritime history, deep oceanic trenches, and vast mineral wealth. History, Etymology & Colonial Milestones: * Origin of the Name: Local linguists trace Surigao to the indigenous root word suligau or saliagao, referring to river currents flowing near the mouth of the main river. Early Spanish records rendered the territory as Surigao or Caraga. * Historic Caraga District: During the early Spanish colonial period, Surigao was part of the vast Province of Caraga, which encompassed almost the entirety of northeastern Mindanao. In 1860, the Spanish government reorganized Mindanao into six military districts, with Surigao designated as the seat of the Third District of Mindanao. * Division into Surigao del Norte & Surigao del Sur (1960): On June 19, 1960, under Republic Act No. 2786, the undivided province of Surigao was split into two independent provinces: Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur. Surigao City was retained as the capital seat of Surigao del Norte. * Subdivision of Dinagat Islands (2006): The offshore island group of the Dinagat Islands was carved out of Surigao del Norte to form an independent province via Republic Act No. 9355. World-Class Islands & Eco-Tourism Marvels: * Siargao Island — "Surfing Capital of the Philippines": Tear-drop shaped Siargao Island is internationally acclaimed for Cloud 9, a world-class barreling right-hand reef break that hosts annual international surfing championships. * Bucas Grande Island & Sohoton Cove: Located in Socorro, the Bucas Grande Group of Islands features Sohoton Cove, a subterranean sea cave and tidal lagoon network accessible only during low tide. It is famous for hosting stingless jellyfish sanctuaries (Mastigias papua) in Lake Tojot and Blue Lagoon. * Magpupungko Rock Pools (Pilar): Natural tidal infinity pools carved into a coastal reef flat, exposed during low tide to reveal crystal-clear saltwater basins separated from the crashing Pacific waves by massive natural rock formations. * Guyam, Daku, and Naked Islands: A iconic trio of islets off General Luna: Daku (the largest islet with fishing communities), Guyam (a miniature palm-covered coral islet), and Naked Island (a bare, shifting white sandbar completely devoid of vegetation). Oceanic & Mineral Wealth: * Adjacent to the Philippine Trench: The eastern coast of Surigao del Norte drops off into the Philippine Trench (also known as the Mindanao Trench), one of the deepest points on Earth reaching depths exceeding 10,500 meters (34,400 feet). * Nickel Mining Heartland: Surigao del Norte hosts major open-pit commercial mining operations (particularly across Tagana-an, Claver, and Tubod), producing vast quantities of high-grade nickel ore exported globally. * Silica & Mineral Reserves: Beyond nickel, the mainland and surrounding islets contain rich reserves of iron ore, gold, chromite, and high-purity silica sand. Cultural & Linguistic Identity: * Surigaonon Language (Jaun-Jaun): The native language is Surigaonon, a Visayan language closely related to Tausūg and Butuanon. A distinct feature of the mainland Surigaonon dialect is its liquid consonant shift, where the "Y" sound in Cebuano is pronounced as a hard "J" (e.g., gihapon becomes gijapon, maayo becomes maajo, and siya becomes sija). * Bonok-Bonok Maradjaw Karadjaw Festival: Celebrated annually on September 9–10 in Surigao City in honor of San Nicolas de Tolentino, this festival showcases traditional ethnic dances of the native Mamanwa tribe set to energetic drumbeats (Bonok-Bonok translates to "heavy downpour"). #tiktokphilippines🇵🇭 #surigaodelnorte #fyp #yankeeph#phgeography
