@pioloferdzsandoval: The Philippines may be moving closer to reviving nuclear power as the United States offers up to $5 billion in potential financing for nuclear energy projects in the country. The proposal could help private companies develop nuclear power facilities, bringing renewed attention to the Philippines’ long-standing ambition to include nuclear energy in its power supply. The development comes as the Philippines faces growing electricity demand and seeks more reliable and diverse sources of energy. Nuclear power could provide a steady supply of electricity while helping reduce reliance on fossil fuels. This proposal could not come at a better time, especially as the Philippines continues to grapple with some of the highest electricity prices in the region. It has also renewed interest in the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP), which was built in the 1980s but never operated. The facility remains a symbol of the country’s unfinished nuclear ambitions. However, it is still unclear whether the proposed US financing would support the possible rehabilitation of the BNPP or the development of new nuclear power projects. Hopefully, this will bring us one step closer to seeing a nuclear power plant finally operating in the Philippines.
