@drlindsayemmerson: You’ve said “five more minutes” three times, and you’re still at the park. Next time, say this: “We’re leaving now, because it’s time to go home and make dinner.” Say it once. Then stop talking and hold the rule. Your child may cry all the way to the car. Stay warm, and keep walking. Every “five more minutes” teaches your child that leaving is up for negotiation. The reason is the warm half. Walking to the car is the firm half. The three-year-old who learns leaving is negotiable is the eight-year-old who negotiates every “time to go.” The rule and the reason, in the same breath. #ReasonedRules #ToddlerTantrums #GentleParenting #PsychologyBackedParenting #DrLindsayEmmerson
