When the February 8, 2002 episode of the sitcom Reba aired on The WB, millions of viewers watched Dolly Parton play a high-powered Texas real estate agent named Dolly Majors. That Season 1 broadcast, titled "She Works Hard for the Money," became one of the highest-rated episodes in the entire six-season run of the series. For Reba McEntire, who had only launched the show on October 5, 2001, the immediate surge in viewership gave network executives the proof they needed that a country music headliner could anchor a Friday night television lineup. Behind the scenes on the Los Angeles studio lot, the appearance happened without standard Hollywood negotiations. When McEntire was navigating the pressure of her first television season away from concert arenas, Parton rearranged a packed schedule to fly to California. She stepped onto the multi-camera soundstage strictly as a personal favor to her longtime Nashville friend, declining a guest fee and asking for no special billing. In the script, McEntire’s character, Reba Hart, applies for a job at a prominent brokerage, only to have Parton’s character turn the interview into an unexpected matchmaking effort. During rehearsals and filming in front of the live studio audience, the two singers relied on decades of shared timing, trading lines with an ease that required very little direction. The ratings from that single Friday night helped secure the future of the series, which ultimately ran for 125 episodes through 2007 and established McEntire as a bankable television actress. Fifteen years after McEntire first took over Parton’s hosting spot at the 1986 CMA Awards, Parton walked onto a Hollywood soundstage and made sure her friend succeeded in a brand-new industry. More from Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire's decades of friendship and that 2002 Season 1 episode is available below.
