@dark_art_dark_travel: Hidden high above the choir of Lincoln Cathedral is one of England's most mischievous little demons, the famous Lincoln Imp. But behind this peculiar medieval carving is a rather entertaining piece of folklore that has become part of the city's identity. According to local legend, the Devil sent two mischievous imps to Lincoln Cathedral to cause havoc. The pair supposedly ran riot inside the building, causing destruction and generally making a nuisance of themselves. Their antics eventually attracted the attention of an angel, who ordered them to stop. One imp apparently wasn't too impressed and decided to throw stones at the angel. Unfortunately for him, the angel had other ideas and turned the troublesome little demon to stone, leaving him perched inside the cathedral for eternity. But what happened to the second imp? Well, folklore has it that he escaped and remained outside, waiting for his companion to return. He's supposedly responsible for the strong winds that frequently batter the cathedral, still waiting for his mate to come out! Although the carving itself dates back to the 13th century, the legend became particularly popular during the Victorian period. In fact, it was during the late 19th century that the Lincoln Imp really became a symbol of the city, thanks in part to local jeweller James Ward Usher, who began producing all manner of souvenirs and jewellery featuring the little demon. Brooches, cufflinks, spoons and other trinkets helped turn a medieval cathedral carving into a Victorian sensation. Today, the Lincoln Imp remains one of the city's best-known symbols, and even gave Lincoln City Football Club their nickname, The Imps. So next time you're inside Lincoln Cathedral, look up towards the Angel Choir.
