Lanna was once a small kingdom. In 1558, during the reign of King Bayinnaung of the Taungoo Dynasty, the Lanna Kingdom was conquered and became a vassal state under Burmese rule. Following its incorporation into the Burmese Empire, Lanna adopted Buddhism while retaining its status as a semi-autonomous feudal territory. As a result, Lanna developed a distinctive cultural identity, blending Theravada Buddhism with Mon, Burmese (Pagan), and Khmer influences. This unique cultural fusion can be seen in its temples, architectural styles, and traditional dances. It would not be entirely wrong to say that some aspects of Burmese traditional clothing and cultural heritage were historically preserved in Lanna due to its past as a Burmese vassal state. However, Lanna traditional attire and Burmese traditional attire are, in fact, significantly different from one another. Every country's traditional clothing has its own distinctive characteristics and established cultural standards, something that is widely recognized around the world. However, in a drama produced and broadcast by GMMTV, an outfit that fully reflects the traditional clothing standards and characteristics of Burmese culture was featured and presented as "Lanna-style." This is why people from Myanmar have raised objections. What people from Myanmar want from GMMTV is simply proper recognition and respect for Burmese cultural heritage. They want GMMTV to acknowledge that the traditional outfits featured in the drama are Burmese traditional costumes, which fully reflect the cultural standards and characteristics of Myanmar, rather than labeling them as Lanna-style.
The Lanna-style clothing portrayed and presented by GMMTV is not actually Lanna traditional attire; it is Burmese traditional clothing. People from Myanmar simply want their cultural identity to be properly acknowledged and credited with the respect it deserves.
