What if, instead of judging your emotions, you started getting curious about them? One of the things I really emphasize with my clients is learning to approach their emotions with curiosity rather than judgment. Because so often, when we experience an uncomfortable emotion, we immediately start criticizing ourselves for feeling it. "I shouldn't feel this way." "Why am I still struggling with this?" "I thought I had already healed from this." "Why can't I just get over it?" But here's the thing: When we judge ourselves for having an emotion, we're often adding another layer of suffering to an already uncomfortable experience. Instead, I encourage asking different questions. Anger: What is underneath this anger? Is there a boundary being crossed, an unmet need, or something that feels unfair? Sadness: What am I grieving, missing, or needing right now? Anxiety: What am I anticipating? Is this an actual threat, or is my nervous system responding to something familiar? Shame: Am I evaluating something I did, or am I making a judgment about who I am as a person? Fear: Is this emotion trying to protect me from something happening now, or something I've experienced in the past? And sometimes, we won't have an answer. That's okay, too. Curiosity creates space for understanding. Judgment often creates more suffering. Just because an emotion is valid doesn't necessarily mean the story we're attaching to it is accurate. Our emotions provide information, but they don't always provide the complete picture. We can validate what we're feeling while still challenging our interpretations and choosing how we respond. That's part of emotional regulation, self-awareness, and psychological flexibility. And I think it's important to remember that healing isn't about reaching a place where uncomfortable emotions no longer exist. It's about developing a healthier relationship with those emotions. Sometimes they need to be explored. Sometimes they require action. Sometimes we need additional support. And sometimes, they simply need to be felt. You don't have to fix every feeling. You can learn to sit with yourself, even in the uncomfortable moments, without abandoning or judging yourself in the process. #EmotionalIntelligence #EmotionalRegulation #SelfCompassion #PsychologicalFlexibility #MentalHealthAwareness
