i recently learned that "voodoo" dolls were essentially a medical record keeping device and I was so ashamed of myself for not considering the possibility that people who couldn't read or write but were still able to practice folk medicine would need some kind of record keeping system

And as a white girl I was raised hearing white adults mock unique black names; I’m sorry it took me such a long time to question this mockery. Hearing the history behind this a few years ago didn’t just teach me the intelligence and strategy of giving a child a unique name…it also helped me realize that so much of what I learned about black culture (from racist white boomers) needs to be questioned immediately.

And then they started discriminating against these names when it came to jobs so my mom named me Tyler so that they would think that i’m a white man and hire me :/

I had absolutely no idea. I’m 40 and I should’ve learned this a long time ago, especially since I got a bachelors degree in history. Thank you for the teachings, I needed it. And the Whitney Plantation has been added to my travel list for some continuing education.

It’s so sad that I’ve learned more through TikTok than I did in school. I’ll be damned if my children grow up with the white-washed version of history that I did.

This is why many want history to be suppressed. We can't let that happen.

I have a customer named Zebedee. He's the 12th of his line. When I learned that I found that out I immediately thought it was a brilliant way to track a family line.

That’s why I don’t respect ANYONE that says “slavery was years ago, get over it” or “why is everything about race?”

I remember having a conversation in history class about this, and I asked “were children given uniquely different names for a specific reason” and I was told “Yes because the slaves were uneducated.” And that never sat right with me. THIS is the answer I have waited for 20 + years for. Thank you.

I learned from a black friend 12 years ago that she had to teach her boys to never put their hands in their pockets in public. It was that moment that changed everything for me. From then on, I vowed to educate myself.
