@xshan_98x: Is it selfish? After spending the best part of a year in survival asking for a bit of reassurance? I don't think so #lifeaftercancer #petscan #mri #cancer #fyp

shout this louder for the rest of us 👏 ive had a laryngectomy full voicebox removed csn only breathe threw hole in my kneck now amd use machines to breathe from vocsl cord cancer being fobbed off for to long I didkt grt the chsnce to have treatment first ot got advanced and would of unalived me. I jad to have treatment after my options was tsken away I have more problems as it had shrunk my only siresy so small battling with tines in and constant pain. Told il ne monitored for 2 year's as that's thr highest risk it coming bsck but no scans? only if something suspicious shows. I will be classed as cancer free if its pased 5 years. so not having a scan living in fear with young children is not selfish! I even had someone message me randomly asking of im cancer free I explained i wokt hsve scan so dont no. she said thsts weird ive never hesrd of that my friend had throwt cancer, treatment then a scan and all clear. like im lying!! different cancer to le for a start. although my friend and another friekds mum both have breast csncer and no scan afger treatment either im told as the radiotherapy has done so much damage to my kneck cells. tissue, muscle damage etc from radiotherapy 30 rounds 5 days week if I get scanned ot could show up as cancer. I would like to think they are professional enough to no between cancer and muscle and tissue damage. it is scary.. nobody will ever understand until they go through it! 🫶

You’re not selfish or wrong for feeling this way at all. But for reassurance, i asked this same question to my oncologist. They told me that they can tell a lot from the profile of the cancer and the amount of node involvement and response to treatment whether it is likely to have spread. I’m sure in your case they are confident it was localised to the breast/nearby lymph nodes and any cells that might have escaped will have been mopped up by chemo and targeted treatments. They will consider the risk of a scan (high radiation) to be too high if they are very confident there was no spread. I know this is difficult though as the spectre of cancer haunts all of us who have been through it and the fear never leaves us. If it’s starting to get in the way of you enjoying your life perhaps you could reach out to BC Now or a cancer support centre so you’re not shouldering this burden alone x

The people calling you selfish have never had cancer. People have know the trauma. Yes scans won’t pick up microscopic cells. Blood tests can predict changes though for specific types. Please look into the Hope course from Macmillan, I really regret not going after treatment as it would have helped my mental health so much. Big love to you x

Hi Shannon……I totally agree with you. However, scanning the area that received radio is pointless straight after treatment due to inflammation etc. it can hide or mimic cancer. As a cervical cancer patient I was not scanned till 3 months after treatment due to this……..if you’re being offered nothing past that point, absolutely push for it. Sadly we have to advocate for ourselves all the time. Good luck ❤️

Who on earth is calling you selfish?!? Heartbroken watching this, I’m exactly the same position as you. Was told that I wouldn’t be eligible for another scan because of risk of radiation (definitely a finding thing they just didn’t want to say it, they weren’t worried about radiation when they were scanning me all over the place when I was first diagnosed) no one could understand how it feels unless they’ve been in that position. You’re not selfish lovely, please don’t let the haters get to you ❤️❤️❤️

your radiotherapy will still be working, and that's why they do a mamagram 12 months after you have finished radiotherapy, apparently it's not good for you to keep having radiation in your body xx

I asked for a PET scan today and got told it increases your cancer risk. I mean the amount of scans we go through I don’t think one more would do that much damage. I too need it for peace of mind. I’ve heard of too many people getting the all clear when it’s growing elsewhere. I’ll keep asking until they give me it

I can answer this. One scan post treatment would not change your management or survival outcome. I'm sorry you're feeling like that.

Can you get a scan privately? If you are this anxious you’ll find the money for it my love, I was given the all clear 3 weeks ago verbally, and that’s good enough for me, I will always stay positive over this until I’m told any different, I had cancer and I refuse to let it dictate the rest of my life xxx

Shannon. I hear your pain. BC survivor here post double mastectomy and medical professional. A further scan will never change the outcome one or management going forward. No oncologist or surgeon can NEVER tell anyone that they are not going to die. I have seen a few of your posts and I would speak to a GP for a referral to secondary care psychological services.

Definitely not selfish!!!! I feel exactly the same as you. I think my mind would rest a bit easier if I had a scan at the end of treatment. Don’t ever think or be told you’re selfish ❤️

YOU ARE NOT SELFISH!!! you a someone who now has to live with this PTSD forever. whoever said that clearly doesn't know how this feels, doesn't know the struggles we have to live with life long. it's selfish to not have empathy or even pretend to understand how our brains are now wired. every cough, pain, headache, twinge, cold, flu, infection takes us right back, take us to that place we're trying so hard to not to be in. there's not enough aftercare and I will stand by that statement!! oncologist, surgeons and breast nurse are great during treatment... but after, where are they? nowhere to be seen. it's awful!!! this time, after treatment is the hardest, hence I started my tiktok after treatment because I really struggle with the fear or recurrence. you are not selfish, you are in survival mode, you're wanting peace of mind for your kids sake more than anything!!!
