The Butler Place Historic District is a 42-acre historic site located just east of downtown Fort Worth, Texas, within an area roughly bounded by Interstate 30, Interstate 35W, and Highway 287. Originally developed between 1939 and 1940 as part of a New Deal-era public housing initiative, the community was constructed through the Public Works Administration to provide affordable housing for low-income residents. It was named in honor of Henry Harrison Butler, a Civil War veteran and one of Fort Worth’s earliest Black educators, reflecting the area’s important connection to African American history and community development. For decades, Butler Place served as a significant residential community, particularly within Fort Worth’s African American neighborhoods. Its historical and architectural importance eventually earned the district recognition on the National Register of Historic Places on August 4, 2011. However, the housing complex gradually transitioned toward closure as redevelopment plans emerged. By 2020, the entire community had been vacated, with former residents relocated through the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Rental Assistance Demonstration program, leaving behind a largely vacant historic neighborhood. Today, the Butler Place Historic District represents an important preservation and redevelopment opportunity in Fort Worth. Owned by Fort Worth Housing Solutions, the property is being considered for a major master-planned transformation that seeks to combine residential and commercial development with the preservation of its historical character. Proposed concepts have included new housing, a transit hub, a 6.5-acre amphitheater, and a dedicated African American museum. Despite its current vacant condition, Butler Place remains an important landmark reflecting Fort Worth’s public housing history, African American heritage, and ongoing urban revitalization efforts. #texas #usa🇺🇸
