Wait... Barbary pirates really pulled up to DEVON and said "this island is ours now"?? 🏴‍☠️ This is the story TikTok history class skipped. For 5 WHOLE YEARS (1627-1632), a group called the Salé Rovers - Barbary corsairs from North Africa (Morocco / Algeria) - sailed WAY north and CAPTURED Lundy Island in the Bristol Channel, off Devon. Lundy was tiny. Like, 30 villagers, sheep, and vibes. Quiet. Peaceful. And then... surprise visitors. They turned it into a full pirate HQ. Not a metaphor. An actual base. From Lundy, they raided the Atlantic coasts. The map in this post is WILD when you see it: THE COMICAL RAIDS & LOOT MAP: • Iceland 1627 (yes, ICELAND - hundreds taken) • Baltimore, Ireland 1631 (entire village looted) • Devon & Cornwall, England (fishermen, villagers, coastal families) • All the way down to Spain, Italy, France - labeled RAID ZONE in the comics What happened to the captives? This is the sensitive history part. They were held on Lundy, then trafficked south to North African slave markets in Salé (Morocco) and Algiers (Algeria). In the markets they were sold as labor, some ransomed by family or church, some traded. Lundy was only retaken in ∼1632 by King Charles I's navy. This series compares two timelines that people always mix up: Barbary Slavery: 1530-1830s - Barbary pirates from the Barbary Coast raiding European coastal towns and ships, taking 1 million+ Europeans over 300 years. European Colonization: 1400s-1900s - European powers colonizing the Americas, Africa, and Asia. Much longer, much larger global system. Two different systems, both part of sensitive history. Both ended, but the way we remember them is very different. Why Lundy matters: It's PROOF they landed in the UK. It's not just a story about ships far away. They were literally off the coast of Devon. If you live in Devon or Cornwall, your local history includes this. The comics say "COMICAL SENSITIVITY EDUCATIONAL HUMOR" and "NOT TRIGGERING, JUST COMICAL" for a reason - this is history told with cartoon style so you can actually learn it without the heavy textbook trauma dump. Think: kidnapped? Yes. Trafficked to markets? Yes. But told as a map, a timeline, and a 4-panel story. Fun fact from Panel 4 that blew my mind: What happened to most Lundy captives? Most were eventually ransomed, released, or traded. Not everyone stayed forever. Ransom was a whole economy. So was Lundy a pirate Airbnb?
