@williamalexandertoys: Did you know a sea otter has the thickest fur of any animal on Earth? 🦦 On a patch of skin just 2.5 cm by 2.5 cm, a sea otter can have up to a million hairs. That is about as many hairs as you would find on ten whole human heads, all squeezed into a space smaller than a postage stamp! Why so much fur? Seals and whales keep warm with a thick layer of fat called blubber, but sea otters do not have any. Instead, their fur traps a layer of air next to the skin. That air keeps the cold sea water away, so the otter stays warm and dry underneath, even while it floats about in chilly water. There is a catch, though. The fur only works when it is clean and fluffy. If it gets dirty or matted, the cold water can reach the skin. So sea otters spend hours every day grooming, rolling over and over, combing with their paws and fluffing up their coats. In this clip you can watch a little group of otters floating, rolling and tidying themselves up. A fun question for home: if you had to spend hours every day brushing your hair, what would you do to make it more fun? Here in our little studio in Timolin, Co. Kildare, William and his dad Ioannis love sharing animal facts like this one. If you enjoy curious creatures and clever toys, come and have a look at williamalexandertoys.com.
