file the grievance. of your union is strong, the city will cave in. in my experience, the unions have many lawyers, the city has 1, and most likely they would pay to get a law firm to handle it.

If you are on probation you can be let go without cause in many places. You will be seen as a "problem employee" by challenging it and will be risking your career. Shouldn't be that way, but it is.
