Psychologist and clinical sexologist Dr. Omar Minwalla calls it "deceptive sexuality," and describes the hidden life as a secret sexual basement beneath the home you share. When it comes to light, he writes, the person "loses their sense of reality about the world in general, their understanding of their partner, the nature of their relationship, and the authenticity of their attachment." That's betrayal trauma. And betrayal trauma doesn't just break your trust in the person who harmed you. It can shatter your trust in your own judgment, in other people, in institutions, and even in your grasp of reality. If this is your story, I want to pause and acknowledge how utterly devastating and soul-crushing this experience can be. The grief, the rage, the despair, the not knowing what was real. All of it is a human response to what was done to you. And if leaving isn't simple, that makes sense too. As Dr. Minwalla notes, "the idea of 'just leaving' is not reality-based for some partners." There was nothing foolish about loving someone you trusted enough to choose. The PTSD study on slide 7 surveyed women whose husbands were in treatment for sexual addiction (Steffens & Rennie, 2006).
