4-7-8 breathing exercise during golden hour in a forest near Dordrecht, the Netherlands. Beautiful sunlight coming through the trees and a perfect moment to enjoy a few minutes of guided breathing outside. I spend quite a lot of time outdoors recording these videos, and golden hour is still my favorite time to do it. Especially in the forest, where the sunlight comes through the branches and creates beautiful patterns on the ground. Sometimes I spend more time looking for a nice place to put my camera than actually recording the exercise! For this session, we're practicing 4-7-8 breathing, a technique that combines a slow inhale, a breath hold, and a longer exhale. Here's how it works: Breathe in gently for 4 seconds. Hold your breath for 7 seconds. Slowly breathe out for 8 seconds. Then repeat. One complete cycle takes 19 seconds, which means you're breathing approximately 3.2 times per minute. That's considerably slower than your normal breathing rhythm, and the 7-second breath hold makes this technique quite challenging for some people. Personally, I enjoy exercises like this because they require a little more concentration. With three different phases to follow, I find it easier to focus entirely on my breathing. And I particularly enjoy the long exhale. After holding my breath, slowly releasing the air feels very different from simply breathing in and out at a normal pace. But something I've learned from practicing so many different breathing techniques is that slower doesn't automatically mean better. If you're struggling to complete the 8-second exhale or constantly feel the need to take a large breath afterward, the exercise is probably too demanding for you at that moment. There's also some interesting research into slow breathing and its effects on the body. Studies suggest that comfortable slow breathing can influence heart rate variability, cardiorespiratory coordination, and perceived stress. Some people also report feeling calmer and more relaxed afterward. However, most research focuses on breathing at approximately 5–6 breaths per minute. There's much less evidence specifically examining 4-7-8 breathing, so we shouldn't assume this particular rhythm has unique benefits. What matters most is finding a breathing pattern that feels comfortable and that you enjoy practicing. If you're new to breathwork, you might prefer starting with something simpler, such as breathing in for 4 seconds and out for 6 seconds without holding your breath. And if you're following along with this video, remember that you don't need to fill your lungs completely or force the air out. Gentle, controlled breathing is enough. I really enjoyed recording this session in the forest near Dordrecht. Sometimes it's nice to get away from the computer, find a quiet spot outside, and spend a few minutes doing something completely different. Try this guided breathing exercise with me and let me know how you feel afterward! Do you enjoy breathing exercises with breath holds, or do you prefer continuous breathing? I offer private 1-on-1 breath coaching, individual consultations, and access to my monthly library of longer guided breathing sessions. I keep the number of clients limited so I can give everyone enough personal attention. Interested? Feel free to contact me at diederikcornelis@gmail.com. Disclaimer: This breathing exercise is intended for relaxation and educational purposes only. Practice seated in a safe place, never while driving or in or near water. Don't force the breath hold, take excessively deep breaths, or continue if you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or uncomfortable. If you have health concerns, consult a healthcare professional before practicing. #breathingexercises #breathingtechniques #guidedbreathing #ademhalingsoefeningen #478breathing
