I DON’T THINK PEOPLE UNDERSTAND WHAT IT’S LIKE TO WATCH YOUR ENTIRE LIFE DISAPPEAR WHILE YOU’RE STILL ALIVE. I don’t think people understand what living with excruciating, relentless, daily chronic pain actually does to a person. I’ve lived with chronic migraines and debilitating pain my entire life. I’ve seen specialists, neurologists, pain management doctors, and just about every kind of medical professional you can imagine. I’ve tried medications, procedures, infusions, injections, therapies, and countless other treatments. I’ve spent years searching for answers. I’ve tried everything people suggest. And when I say everything, I genuinely mean it. Either it doesn’t work, I’ve already tried it, or I simply cannot afford it. Eight months ago, I was forced to walk away from a career I spent 21 years building as a hairstylist. I had to move across the country and move in with my parents because my pain had become so debilitating that I could no longer take care of myself. I went from being an independent woman with a successful career, industry recognition, brand partnerships, and a community of 250,000 followers on Instagram (all while pushing through the pain), to having no job, no income, and almost no independence. I started TikTok because I thought it might give me a way to work from home, selling on TikTok Shop to rebuild my financial independence in a way that accommodated my disability. But here’s the reality: consistency is almost impossible when you’re living with debilitating pain. Every day I open this app, I see women talking about making $10,000, $20,000, even $100,000 a month. And I can’t help thinking about what I could accomplish if I weren’t fighting for my ability to function every single day. I know what I’m capable of. I’ve built a successful career before. I know I have the experience, creativity, and work ethic. I don’t lack ambition. I lack the physical ability to consistently show up. And the isolation is something I don’t think people talk about enough. I don’t have friendships or a social life like other women my age. I don’t make spontaneous plans. I don’t go out. I don’t can’t maintain relationships the way I desperately want to. I’m grateful for my parents, my family, and the people at church who love me, but I desperately miss having friends and experiencing an ordinary life. I want to fall in love. I want to get married. I want to make plans without wondering whether I’ll be physically capable of following through. I want to have a career, financial independence, friendships, and a future that doesn’t revolve around managing pain. I’m also a woman of faith. I’ve seen God move. I’ve prayed for healing for years, and my family has prayed for me for years. I believe in Jesus. I believe in the power of prayer. But I would be lying if I said I haven’t struggled with my faith when the suffering continues and the healing I’ve prayed for hasn’t come. People tell me that someday I’ll be on the other side of this and will be able to help so many people. But what if you’ve never experienced the other side? What if it’s been getting progressively worse for years? What if you’re just exhausted? Jeremiah 29:11 talks about God’s plans for us, plans for hope and a future, plans to prosper us and not to harm us. Right now, when I look at my life, I’m struggling to understand what that future looks like, and I feel like I’m being harmed. I don’t want another list of treatments to try. I don’t need another person telling me to exercise, try obvious remedies, change my diet, list off more meds, or think positively. I know people mean well, but sometimes what someone living with chronic illness needs most is for someone to acknowledge how devastating this experience actually is. When you see me posting videos, please understand that I am almost always in pain. You just don’t see it. Some days I can push through. Other days the pain is so severe that I can barely get out of bed. #chronicpain #chronicmigraine #chronicillness
