Mom is the original pack leader. She provides protection and direction because she loves her puppies. Because she loves them, she will protect them, especially when they are vulnerable as puppies. She will provide direction in the form of rules, boundaries, and limitations to any animals who come in contact with her puppies. As her puppies mature, she will provide rules, boundaries, and limitations to her puppies in a calm, confident way... because she loves and cares about them. Mother dogs take the role of leadership seriously because they know that with great leadership, the puppies will have the best chance of surviving and being balanced adults. As you can see here, she requires a lot of respect for her puppies' space. She gives a warning and then corrects the male who was curiously inspecting too close in her eyes. She follows up with another warning and then moves towards the male to move him away. Two things to note here: 1) For my female clients, when you get a puppy, it's not just about nurturing. As you can see, mom can absolutely be firm. We have to remember that a puppy is coming from a strong mother and needs you to take over as a loving but firm mother figure for the dog. 2) Respecting the puppy's space is something mom takes very seriously. As you can see, the male understands this. If you have a dog and bring home a baby, we should absolutely require our dogs to respect the baby's space. It's in their instincts to do so, but many people have created imbalanced dogs who don't respect space, which can become problematic when bringing a baby home. Please see my past videos on how to introduce a baby to the home. Always remember that Mom is the original leader/parent-figure for a puppy. She is nurturing but also firm when needed. She is firm because she loves her puppies. It's our responsibility to take over this job when we get a puppy!
