Imagine being forced to hide your faith, worship in secret, and risk years in prison simply because you chose to follow Jesus Christ. This is the reality facing Christians in Libya, one of the most dangerous countries in the world to be a Christian. According to Open Doors’ 2026 World Watch List, Libya ranks 9th worldwide for Christian persecution. Behind this ranking are people facing arrest, intimidation, surveillance, violence and immense pressure to abandon their faith. The situation is particularly dangerous for Libyans who convert from Islam to Christianity. Many are forced to practise their faith in complete secrecy, unable to openly attend church, share their beliefs or even discuss their conversion with their families. Those discovered risk rejection, threats, house arrest, physical violence and, in some cases, even death. The persecution is not limited to society. Security authorities have also targeted Christians. Since the arrest of several Libyan Christians in March 2023, monitoring of Christian activities online has reportedly increased, making even digital communication dangerous. And in April 2025, the situation took an even darker turn. Ten Libyan Christians and one Pakistani Christian received prison sentences ranging from three to fifteen years on alleged blasphemy charges. These cases have raised serious concerns about freedom of religion and the treatment of religious minorities in the country. Foreign Christians, particularly migrants from other African countries, are also vulnerable. Some face kidnapping, human trafficking, forced labour and abuse at the hands of extremist groups and criminal networks. Let that sink in. People are being forced to choose between their safety and practising their religion. Christianity is not a crime. Freedom of conscience is a fundamental human right, and no government, militia or individual should have the power to imprison someone simply for what they believe. To our brothers and sisters in Libya: You are not forgotten. The Church stands with you. We pray for your protection, your freedom and your strength. How long will the world remain silent? 🇱🇾✝️
