@natlwomenshistorymuseum: NASA’s 2025 astronaut class is making history. 🚀 For the first time since the agency began selecting new astronauts in 1959, the current astronaut class is made up of majority women: six women and four men. The class, nicknamed the “Platypi,” was named by the previous astronaut class. NASA astronauts said the group reminded them of the platypus because of its unusual combination of skills, experiences, and talents. Like the animal itself, which is known for its distinctive mix of characteristics, the candidates bring diverse backgrounds in fields including medicine, engineering, military aviation, geology, and commercial spaceflight. The astronaut candidates are currently training for future missions to the International Space Station, the Moon, and eventually Mars. This selection marks another milestone in the long history of women’s contributions to space exploration, from pioneering astronauts like Sally Ride and Eileen Collins to the next generation preparing to explore beyond Earth. 🌍 #womenshistory #NWHM #NASA #space #womeninSTEM
