They are not supposed to do that. Y’all need to start reporting them!

You have to go underground. people who know people type of thing. the websites are useless. also use housing connect. the system usually favors voucher holders for this particular reason. Good luck

Cash is better. Vouchers are not worth it.

I’m not saying this about you, but presentation can make a difference. I always encourage people with vouchers to treat an apartment viewing like a job interview: dress well, smell good, and make a strong first impression. I wouldn’t start the conversation by asking whether they accept vouchers. Go see the apartment and let them meet you first. New York law prohibits landlords from discriminating against people because they use a housing voucher. Still, some landlords may judge you as soon as they see you and learn you have a voucher. They might assume you’re going to damage the apartment before they even get to know you. It’s a game, and you have to know how to play it.

They don’t want to work with you because if the city decides to take away the voucher they won’t get paid. Landlord love nothing but money accepting a voucher means they have to keep the units up to standards but they 9/10 won’t so they rather not take the voucher

The clientele has a sense of entitlement, and for something they didn’t work for is crazy work.

in my experience working with families, the one bedrooms actually are harder to find. especially if you're looking for specific neighborhoods. there's an over abundance for larger families. as far as the voucher, a lot of landlords don't want to see certain contributions from the tenants bc they don't trust it will get paid. my advice is definitely treat it like an interview, present yourself and sell yourself ensuring them that you will pay your portion. obviously there will still be scum bags and nothing you do will satisfy them. they are biased, hide your piercings and tattoos if you need to. you don't have to go dressed professionally but a plain t shirt and jeans or work uniform is better than going in pajamas. landlords are not supposed to deny you based on your voucher. if they tell you that, document it and report them. if a broker feels they'll have a hard time finding you something it's probably better they are honest instead of giving you false hope. certain landlords are definitely accepting vouchers, that particular broker just might not have the connections to them.

No the reason why they don’t accept it is because of stigma and the fact that they don’t want to deal with the government possibly not paying on time. Many realtors and landlords do what they can to not take the customers. Read the arc of justice about what happened in Chicago

I’ve found a few landlords that work with the vouchers. The truth is a lot of the realtors are scamming just off the application fees and pre-screening fees. Than these other ppl making content money but really not putting in the work to give the help they are advertising. It’s some out there but they are being overshadowed by the scammers

There’s a history of people getting vouchers and destroying apartments or turning them into trap houses etc which really really sucks everyone has to suffer because of ppls mistakes but that’s why they are building all these mixed use buildings all over for ppl with vouchers but that’s why also sucks because they mix several populations with different needs like recovering addicts, currently addicted, mentally ill, chronically homeless, LGBTQ+, families with children, hasa recipients, section 8, supportive housing etc. it’s annoying but that’s honestly the reason.
