The people who swear off winter camping almost always picked the wrong first trip: too cold, too long, too far, nothing plugged in. ⠀ Most people pick a hard first trip by accident (a week, in January, in the mountains, off-grid). Four dials, every one turned down. How cold: upper 20s and single digits are different sports, so go when it freezes overnight and thaws by lunch. How long: two nights, enough to hear the furnace and watch the propane gauge move. How connected: book the full-hookup site with power. How far: an hour from home. ⠀ What surprises people is the evening, not the temperature. In December there are about 15 hours between dinner and sunrise, so bring a lamp you'd actually read under. The furnace runs most of the night, so fill the propane and plan in multiples of a summer weekend. And the water running down the inside of the glass on the first morning isn't a leak, it's last night's breath and showers with nowhere else to go. ⠀ Ask when you book whether the water is on at the site and the dump station is open, and arrive with the fresh tank full either way.
