@_1_iceprincess: A 19-year-old mother is being charged with neglect of a dependent after her young child died while the two were co-sleeping. According to court documents, officers with the Marion Police Department were called to a residence on North Adams Street on reports of a child being in a life-threatening condition on May 3. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived before MPD and began treating the child. Officers quickly arrived thereafter and began an investigation. On May 9, the child died at the hospital. An autopsy later revealed that the cause of death was listed as “anoxic encephalopathy,” which is a brain injury caused by a complete or nearly complete lack of oxygen to the brain and an unsafe sleep environment. Court documents indicate that the mother, Shiann Bodkins of Marion, told officers that she would usually co-sleep with her child even though she knew she was not supposed to. Bodkins told investigators that she didn’t put the child in the bassinet because the child wasn’t comfortable and didn’t sleep well there. The morning that MPD was called to the residence, Bodkins had placed the child in bed next to her. The child was reportedly positioned near the top of the bed, near the pillows and near her head. Bodkins said that she woke up twice to feed and change her child before placing them back in bed. Around 10:30 a.m., she was awoken by her mother, who stated that the child was not moving or breathing, which prompted the EMS call.
