There’s no licensed treatments for this available on the NHS other than statins which don’t actually lower lipoprotein a levels. NHS GPs won’t do this blood test as it’s too costly. Costs around £150 privately to get this blood test..

I had mine tested and it came back very high! This was a shock as I have high cholesterol and high blood pressure . Gp has increased statins but they have horrible side effects .

I asked my GP to do the A/B ratio before starting statins. He said it’s not available on the NHS (Scotland). So I did my own privately. Even drew my own blood lol…. The results came back and I agreed to the statins. My CIMT was normal as well.

My cholesterol was on high side. 6.8. I had LP (a) done which was 7. I had tests with an online company and you go somewhere local to have blood drawn. Not too expensive either. So do I need to worry ?

the standard lipid panel doesn't include Lp(a). All your cholesterol numbers can look OK but you still might have high Lp(a)and not know. GPs never offer it unless you have a heart related issue so you have to ask for it. Also ask for ApoB, another critical lipid marker not in the standard panel which is well worth knowing.
