I love art fairs and I think it’s because they feel less like a formal art experience and more like a kind of playground for curiosity, where you can wander without a plan and still learn a huge amount just by paying attention. You’re getting this real-time pulse of the contemporary art world by seeing what galleries are choosing to show right now, what artists are being pushed forward, what ideas keep resurfacing across booths, and what actually stops you in your tracks when everything is competing for your attention at once. When all the art is placed side by side like that, it becomes a lot easier to understand your own taste, because certain works just float to the top for you. I also love art fairs because of the walking encyclopedias that attend… and you can just talk to them! You end up talking to gallerists, other collectors, sometimes even artists, and you start to pick up on how people think about art, how they evaluate it, what they notice that you might have missed, and those small moments of learning really compound over time. It’s honestly a big part of why I started Art Rookie, because I realized how much of my own understanding came from simply being curious in those spaces and asking questions, and I wanted to recreate that feeling somewhere people could access more easily. Art fairs remind me that you don’t need to have all the answers walking in, you just need to be willing to look a little longer, ask a few more questions, and let your curiosity lead the way. #artrookie #artfair #contemporaryart #artcollecting #artcollector
