Which Countries Have the Best-Performing Students? International education rankings offer a window into how effectively schools prepare students for life beyond the classroom. The OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment—PISA—tests 15-year-olds in mathematics, science and reading. The 2025 assessment involved more than 760,000 students across 91 countries and economies, with results published in September 2026. The strongest performers included the participating Chinese jurisdictions and Singapore, alongside education systems such as Japan, South Korea, Estonia and Chinese Taipei. An important qualification: the graphic’s “China” label represents Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang, rather than a nationwide sample of China. Their results should therefore be interpreted within that geographic scope. The graphic also illustrates how performance varies by subject. Its figures place Singapore highest in reading, while the participating Chinese jurisdictions lead in mathematics and science. The United States appears 16th in the graphic’s combined average, with science its strongest subject and mathematics its weakest. That combined average summarizes three different areas and can conceal meaningful strengths and weaknesses. A single rank does not tell the whole story. PISA assesses samples of students, so scores carry statistical uncertainty. Small differences between education systems may not represent meaningful differences in achievement. The OECD consequently advises interpreting rankings as ranges of possible positions rather than treating every numbered place as definitive. Beyond the rankings, the 2025 findings reveal broader challenges. Reading and mathematics performance continued to decline across OECD countries, while average science performance remained broadly stable compared with 2022. Family income and social circumstances remained strongly associated with achievement: advantaged students scored an average of 85 points higher in science than disadvantaged students. The results also raise questions about classroom technology. More than one in four students reported that classmates were distracted by digital devices during most or every science lesson. Students exposed to that distraction tended to perform worse and feel less engaged. These findings show an association; they do not establish that devices alone caused lower scores. The practical lesson extends beyond competition between countries. The OECD emphasizes strong teaching, focused curricula, parental involvement and targeted support for struggling students. PISA provides evidence for improving those conditions, while its scores capture only part of what students learn and what schools contribute to their lives. #fyp #education #university #intelligence #china
