It’s difficult to properly calculate the packaging cost for item but I think this a good estimate for a parcel this size, £1.20 for everything seen to wrap this jar. This is an expensive piece from my range, whereas normally I use these boxes for mugs and small bowls, (£75 & £65), in those instances, the packaging materials make up approximately 1.7% of the cost of the items, whereas in this instance, with the pot should in the video, it’s 0.29%.    Packaging materials are much cheaper the more you purchase, so with the boxes I use hundreds of, and for things like the corrugated cardboard, the paper bubble wrap and tape, I tend to order it in large quantities as in some cases it’s half the price.  One thing you quickly realise though is the sheer amount of space this stuff takes up; no wonder companies have packaging depots. In my workshop there are certain things I only order when it’s ‘shop restock week’, like the biodegradable starch packaging chips. I need roughly six makes of 15 cubic foot per online shop restock, that’s 90 cubic foot of space that evaporates from my studio, so I only order these in as and when I need them, yet if I could, I’d order far more.   The boxes are easier to store, tape too, and a mezzanine is perfect as it all gets far less dusty than everything in the pottery workshop below. Time wise, each parcel probably takes between 2-5 minutes to pack, with larger ones taking 8-10 minutes. It’s a time sink and the 260 parcels packed last week took 5 days with help for 4 of those.   It’s also a task that cannot be rushed as poor packing means there’s a higher chance the pots will break during transit. In a way, it’s why I like to be so involved with the process, as I feel more reassured that they’ll get there in one piece. Breakage happens but it’s rare, I’ve sent thousands of parcels at this point and I can count the smashed pots on one hand. It’s inevitable really that it’ll happen, thus I pack in such a way that is sometimes a bit over the top, but I’d rather spend a few more pounds on packaging than have pots regularly break.   #unboxing #SmallBusiness #satisfying #ceramics #pottery
