A 37-year-old man has been sentenced to three life terms in prison after pleading guilty to 119 charges involving the sexual abuse and exploitation of three minor children over several years. Christiaan Francisco Fortleza van der Linde was sentenced in the Welkom Regional Court, sitting as a designated Sexual Offences Court. The court imposed life imprisonment for rape and trafficking in persons. He received additional prison terms for grooming, sexual assault, sexual exploitation, kidnapping, attempted murder, defeating the ends of justice, and multiple counts relating to child pornography. All the additional fixed-term sentences were ordered to run concurrently with the life sentences. The court heard that the offences took place between 2015 and 2024 and involved a sustained pattern of grooming, abuse and exploitation. The State told the court that Van der Linde gained access to his victims through positions of trust. He repeatedly abused them over extended periods and created child sexual abuse material, some of which he sold and distributed online. When the offences involving the second victim came to light, he trafficked and kidnapped the child and attempted to murder the child. He also tried to destroy electronic devices and evidence to defeat the course of justice. A third child was also drawn into the abuse after Van der Linde manipulated the second victim into creating abusive material involving the third child, without that child's knowledge. During sentencing, the defence asked the court to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence of life imprisonment. The State, represented by Advocate Elma van Niekerk, strongly opposed the application, arguing there were no substantial and compelling circumstances to justify a lesser sentence. The State submitted that the conduct was not isolated, but a calculated and sustained pattern of manipulative behaviour directed at children over many years. In aggravation, the State presented four victim impact statements compiled by Court Preparation Officer Rosie Dube. The statements detailed the profound emotional and psychological trauma suffered by the victims and their families. The court heard that two of the victims had become suicidal as a result of the abuse. The prosecution also raised concern that intimate photographs and videos created by the accused remain unaccounted for, raising fears the material could still be circulating and prolonging the victims' trauma. The court expressed shock and repulsion at the accused's conduct, particularly his calculated exploitation of the victims' trust. It agreed with the State and imposed the three life sentences. In addition, the court ordered that Van der Linde's particulars be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders. He was declared unfit to possess a firearm, prohibited from working with children, and barred from possessing or using any electronic device while serving his sentence.
