Don Beyer (D-VA) on Thursday blasted President Trump's proposed triumphal arch, which veterans groups and preservationists are suing to block in court, calling it a "permanent blight" on the viewshed of Arlington National Cemetery. "In my life, I've never seen a project with such profound, widespread opposition from my community — men and women, old and young, Republican and Democratic," the Northern Virginia congressman said at a press conference. "This monumental abomination to one man's ego disrespects every service member who's buried there. It will harm dozens of irreplaceable historic sites and it's not only a disgrace, it's a danger." Rep. Beyer called the arch "illegal" and mocked the Trump administration's argument that it was needed for national security purposes, including claims that it would double as a sniper post and military drone base. "That's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. We have the busiest airport in the country just down the river, and thousands of tourists and commuters within feet of the site," he said.
