I have a Cessna CJ3. I have about 5 pilots that rotate when my managing pilot is not available. I know all my pilots & interview all in advance including telling them I’m a little white knuckled & always want a call-out 20 minutes in advance of landing conditions. If I’m landing in minimums, 200 feet normally, I want to know. I ALWAYS leave decisions on go/no go to pilot although we discuss. They know they control my plane & I will not override them.
Since this accident, a couple of pilots & I have been analyzing and discussing. We do this for all accidents. What can we learn? But some of the discussion is me “reading” their thoughts as my life/family is in their hands. Yes, I have flown charters & jetcard but I also tell those pilots my desires. Know your pilot. Early day flights was in a small twin & we had to set the plane down as couldn’t get through a squall line around Montgomery AL. Pilot to copilot over radio thinking I wasn’t on said, “if I didn’t have passengers I’d take it to 6,000 & go through the line. Two weeks later he was dead. He was young & maybe didn’t understand his mortality.
Flying is not a game. Take it seriously and know your pilot. And your pilot needs to know you also and never ask your pilot to go above his level of safety. This accident is just sad. A mistake was made & many fine people have perished. It’s just sad.

Aspen is a very challenging airport to begin with. One way in, one way out. High density altitude and mountain wave turbulence.

So he’s indirectly blaming the pilot when he knows nothing about why the plane crasjsd

Airlines are a lot safe. The standard those pilots are held to especially in major airlines is very high.

I used to fly private in a cessna citation quite often for work. You can definitely feel the difference in turbulence vs. a larger commercial aircraft.

Fly with FLEXJET, VISTA or NETJETS. Not with a small operator

Let’s do some actual math. According to NTSB data, U.S. on demand charter airplanes logged approximately 27.7 million flight hours between 2015 and 2024, with just 44 fatal accidents. That works out to a fatal accident rate of approximately 0.00016% per flight hour. And that includes aircraft other than private jets. Fatal crashes make headlines. The millions of flights that land safely don’t.

There are so many factors. At the end of the day you can’t control everything. Accidents happen. See the Biffle citation crash. A retired Delta Captain flew that thing into the ground after making several bad mistakes.

I have flown into Aspen on a Lear 45 and it was terrifying. I looked up how many privates crash every year. It was surprisingly high. I will not ever fly private again.

It’s tragic what happened to those people, but… what if that plane landed on a house? Or on a playground? A school? Like we are all just chillin at home and there’s a chance a jet can fall out of the sky and slam into us at any moment.
