Friendly reminder that one of the actresses in Friday the 13th part 4 got hypothermia because the director made them reshoot a scene in the lake too many times

Andddd adding that to the list of never watching. I genuinely can’t watch that if I know what’s happening to the actors is awful, same with the shining. Any good movies that are similar?

likely because directors didnt know how to treat their actors since a lot of old horror movies were the directors first and it was the 70s/80s so actors probably didnt get treated that well

In most cases it’s for authentic reactions. But yeah, there are cases where it crosses a line. (Glances at poor Tippi Herron in The Birds)

it’s similar to the ppl who do method acting but just act rude to everyone, SOME directors tend to want full control on the set and often think of authenticity over the health and safety of cast/crew

This is actually a super interesting topic and it still happens in horror movies today. “Horror” has been itself considered much of a ‘plebeian’ style of entertainment- where horror movies are cheap and easy to make. Have 3 actors and at least a bucket of some vaguely realistic blood? Congrats you’ve got a quick and fun slasher on your hands. This unfortunately creates more issues with regulations- we need a guy to run with a pickaxe because he’s chasing someone, if he falls and breaks a rib? Well how were we supposed to prevent it? You don’t really have a whole lot of running with pickaxes in your average drama or comedy! It’s been related to “coming with the territory” so if we need a woman to be extremely afraid, or we need a house to look disgusting, or we need blood shoved down someone’s throat for a horribly nasty scene- it IS and always HAS been easier to just do that exact thing. Make the woman actually afraid. Make the house actually disgusting. REALLY shove blood down that actor’s throat and hope for a great shot. Unfortunately this is just a standard practice and it really sucks- horror is treated as lesser and therefore it gets created with less thought or less attention than a film that is wayyy more active about keeping its actors safe
