It actually winds me up a bit that some subjects get bursaries while others don’t 😭

Apprenticeships are a bit different as your employed by a company as an Apprentice therefore they get a wage from the company, but the company get funding from the government. The school that they are working at should get funding to contribute to a percentage of the wage and the remainder of a wage made up by the Uni and school. Its a learning job and they are still helping the school that they are at to some degree while learning, like you said not the ful job of a teacher but still a job should still be getting paid albeit on a reduced wage from a fill time teacher.

My next placement is from January - April next year, and I’ll be teaching up to 80% so the same as an ECT and I won’t be earning a penny. Alongside also trying to find a job, writing my dissertation, and working part time. It would help so much if we got a little pay during placement, I wouldn’t have to work which would relieve a lot of stress

All placements that take the same hours (if not more than) a full time job should be paid. It costs a fortune in the travel, childcare etc. and you essentially have £9,000 a year to cover your everything. Creates a divide between those that can afford to train and those that can’t.

My first year on uni my placement last 2 weeks longer than my student accommodation had been paid for the uni basically said we had to pay £300 more, stay in a hotel or work something else out. So yes student teachers should be paid (that is only one tiny example of why)

Currently doing a PME in Ireland for secondary school teacher I’ve had all my own classes since day one for this two year course in school everyday classes are my full responsibility from preparing to teaching to parent teacher meetings. 100% should be paid atleast minimum wage for doing this !! The university are very quick to take €8,000 per a year for fees and think it’s still perfectly acceptable for you to work for free all year in the placement school too the system is crazy ! This results in me needing to work part time on the weekends then too where do we get the time to do anything else with our lives 🙃🙃

Exactly, what other job would you have to work in for 1-4 years, working 70 hour weeks, for FREE? Well you pay for transports, resources, uni fees etc. I wonder if it wasn’t a female dominated career then maybe we would get an actual pay for labour…

Bursaries like nurses for student teachers should be a thing. Working another job and on placement on PGDE was not it!
